In the Ntungamo District on Wednesday, President Museveni met with Mr. Kenneth Roth, the executive director of Human Rights Watch, and his staff.

Museveni said on Thursday morning, “They shared with me a report which contains evidence on alleged torture and human rights breaches, among other things.”

He declared that cases of unlawful detention, torture, and abuses of human rights will not be accepted.

“Torture is useless and wrong at the same time. We will confirm the report’s conclusions and take appropriate action, he continued.

It was encouraging to hear President Museveni declare that torture, illegal detention, and other human rights abuses would not be accepted. Not only is torture wrong, it is also unnecessary. We will check, then take appropriate action. The current criteria is whether offenders are brought to justice. Impunity implies approval,” added Roth.

“Ugandan President Museveni made many commitments to HRW during our discussion with him yesterday to improve the nation’s steadily deteriorating human rights record,” he continued. We will soon be watching for him to follow through on those promises.
