Meet the Speakers at the Fifth Annual Kampala Geopolitics Conference

Kampala Geopolitics Conference tomorrow, Tuesday, November 15, 2022, classes will begin in the Yusuf Lule Auditorium at Makerere University.

Makerere University, in collaboration with Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS), UN Women, and the French Embassy, is hosting a conference with the theme “Bringing International Debates to Africa.”

This year’s conference will host 15 panels with over 80 speakers discussing topics relating to global challenges, security, regional trends, sustainable development, sport, culture, and society among others.

Isabella Tugume, a journalist, will manage arrivals, introductions, and opening remarks.

Solomon Serwanjja, the Executive Director of the African Institute for Investigative Journalism, will conduct the inaugural panel titled “Global Impact of the War in Ukraine – African Perspective” from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.

The panelists include Dr. Samuel Kazibwe, an expert in international relations, Antonio Querido, the FAO’s country representative, Prof. Phillip Kasaija Apuuli of Makerere University’s Political Science Department, and Manuel Lafont-Rapnouil, of the Centre d’analyse, de prévision et de stratégie (CAPS) (TBC).

Joseph Kigozi – General Manager NBS Sport and Next Media Deputy Group CEO and Chief Strategy Officer – will conduct the panel entitled “Impact of Globalization on the Development of Sport and Cultural and Creative Industries.”

Rasheeda Nalumoso, Arts Manager, British Council Uganda; Peace Proscovia, Uganda Netball Captain; Morris Mugisha, Film Director; Andrew Ahuurra, Director, Quad A Records; Nicole Magabo, Invention Film; are the panelists.

Ahmed Hadji, Adjunct Professor and Senior Fellow at Africa Institute for Strategy and Policy, will moderate the panel “The Future of East African Jihadism Revisited: the Cases of East Congo, Mozambique, and Somalia.”

Dr. Hans-Jakob Schindler is the Senior Director of the Counter Extremism Project (CEP), Abdishakur Hassan-Kayd is the Senior Security Advisor for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Somaliland, Liesl Louw-Vaudran is the Senior Researcher at the Institute for Security Studies (ISS), and Angelo Izama is a journalist.

Walter Mwesigye, Health Editor of Nation Media Group, will lead the discussion “Health: Moving from Leadership to Partnership for a Sustainable Global Health Strategy.”

Tlaleng Mofokeng – UN Special Rapporteur on Right to Health, South Africa, Hon. Ruth Aceng – Minister of Health Uganda, Yonas Tegegen Woldemariam – Country Representative WHO, Prof. Christian Happi – Centre director, African Centre of Excellence in Genomics of Infectious diseases, and Dr. Louis Kamulegeya – Projects and Research Manager, Rocket Health are among the speakers.

Robert Kirunda, founding partner of Kirunda & Wasike Advocates, will lead the panel “Cybersecurity-Resilience of African States and Threat Scenario.”

Dustin Dehez – Managing Director secori advisors, Famious Orishaba – Cyber Security Expert | Threat Intelligence Analyst, Moses Owinyi – Centre for Multilateral Affairs, Stephen Mugabe – Manager Data Protection Affairs, National Data Protection Office Uganda, and Nanjiri Sambuli – UN Panel on Digital Cooperation are among the speakers (TBC).

Ivan Okuda, an attorney and author, will lead the panel titled “Defending Rights in Times of Insecurity: Human Rights, Development, and Security Policy.”

Ivan Rugambwa, a journalist and social commentator, Anthony Masake, the director of Chapter Four Uganda, Robert Ssempala, the director of the Uganda Human Rights Network for Journalists, and Hanna Schneider, the Munich Security Conference’s programme manager, are the speakers.

Understanding Uganda’s Out-Migration Trends will be moderated by Ojok Okello, Programme Manager of the Uganda & South Sudan Country Office of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation.

Speakers include Agnes Igoye, an expert on migration with the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Prof. Jimmy Spire Ssentongo, associate dean of the SPGSR at Uganda Martyrs University, and Prof. James Mwangi. Micheal Mutyaba – Immigration Consultant; Frank Nuwagaba – Immigration Officer, Ugandan Ministry of Internal Affairs; Barbara Maureen Kalumba – Programme Manager, Africa Institute of Investigative Journalism.

At 9:30 a.m. on the second day, the inaugural panel will begin with panelists including H.E. Xavier Sticker, Nils Wormer, Paulina Chiwangu, Patrice Gilles, Professor Barnabas Nawangwe, and Isabella Tugume.

Kwezi Tabaro, Deputy Director of the LéO Africa Institute, will moderate the panel titled “The Role of the African Union in Conflict Resolution — To What Extent Can Pan-African Interests Exist?”

Dr. Gerrit Kurtz, German Institute for International and Security Affairs, Daniel Bwambale, Judicial Service Commission, Nkunda Dismas, Atrocities Watch Africa, and Dr. Andrew E. Poku-Yaw Tchie, Norwegian Institute of International Affairs are among the panelists.

In addition to cultural acts and an exhibition, the conference will involve training for journalists on how to cover various issues.
