In his most memorable transfer window as United’s manager, Erik ten Hag has made the Netherlands international De Jong his top priority.

‘Barcelona know how frantic United are to get players,’ Pallister said. ‘They will push as far as possible to get anything cash they can and that is the case at whatever point United come thumping.

‘They are as yet considered perhaps of the most extravagant club on the planet. Ideally they can finish that arrangement, de Jong is at the right age, has a lot of involvement, and is the sort of player that can communicate his thoughts at a spot like United.

‘He is utilized to the tension and the spotlight having been at Barcelona so he would positively mark a crate. Midfield has been an area of concern.’
