Police in Uganda have stated that they will not give up their search for social media critic and blogger Fred Lumbuye.

Following two months in detention at Turkey’s Kocaeli Foreigners Detention Centre, Lumbuye was released by Turkish authorities yesterday.

However, according to Uganda Police, the social media critic is still on the run and faces prosecution.

Lumbuye has been charged in at least 15 cases, and police said they will “summon him as soon as he is in jurisdiction.”

Uganda Police spokesperson Fred Enanga told the New Vision, “Our position remains unchanged.”

Despite his release, Lumbuye was briefed on ongoing cases in Turkey, according to Muwada Nkunyingi, a spokesperson of the National Unity Platform (NUP) in Turkey.

Nkunyingi stated that matters that were never resolved will continue regardless of the release, and urged their legal team to complete them as soon as possible.

NUP and its members were ecstatic after Lumbuye’s release, hailing it as a triumph over injustice.

“We are relieved to read that comrade Lumbuye Fred has been released after being detained for several months. We are grateful to the legal team, the diaspora team, and all people of goodwill who worked tirelessly to obtain Mr. Lumbuye’s release,” NUP said in a statement.

“I am relieved that political activist Lumbuye was released from prison in Turkey yesterday (October 18) after several months in custody. “I am grateful to the legal team, our diaspora leadership, and all Ugandans who worked tirelessly to get his release,” stated NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi.
