According to Turkish sources, government critic and YouTuber Fred Lumbuye will be released soon by Turkish officials.
All major legal applications have been made, according to Muwada Nkunyingi, the shadow foreign affairs minister and MP, and Lumbuye is on the verge of being released from detention.
In a statement, Nkunyingi said, “The legal team in Turkey confirmed to us that Turkish Authorities informed them that Fred Lumbuye will be “conditionally” released if all key legal procedures were completed.”
Nkunyingi said in a statement that their legal team is determined to following up on all processes to have Lumbuye released as soon as possible.
When internet allegations surfaced last month that Lumbuye had been quietly deported to Uganda, Nkunyingi verified seeing the controversial vlogger and government opponent in Turkey.
Since news of Lumbuye’s arrest broke, the MP claimed he had been on a fact-finding expedition in Turkey.
In August, the government said that Lumbuye was in their possession and that he will be repatriated to Uganda to face charges.
When Lumbuye was not introduced, Foreign Affairs Minister Okello Oryem eventually backtracked, saying that they had done their part.
Lumbuye was reportedly being kept in Gulu for further questioning, according to several sources. Oryem, on the other hand, was unable to verify these reports.
