Luis Rubiales is detained as part of a corruption probe

Luis Rubiales, the former president of the Spanish football federation (RFEF), was arrested on Wednesday as part of a corruption investigation.

After being held upon his arrival in Madrid from the Dominican Republic, he was immediately freed.

While negotiating a lucrative arrangement to host the Spanish Super Cup competition in Saudi Arabia, he is suspected of earning unlawful commissions.

The prosecution is requesting a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence.

Mr. Rubiales disputes any misconduct.

He was escorted into a black van together with multiple Civil Guard members after getting off the aircraft. Not long after, he was freed.

According to RTVE, a public broadcaster in Spain, Mr. Rubiales might go to court on Thursday.

Mr Rubiales was in the Dominican Republic when police searched his home last month.

They also searched the football federation headquarters and made several arrests.

Mr Rubiales is also separately due to go on trial for sexual assault for kissing the player Jenni Hermoso on the mouth after last summer’s World Cup final.

Ms Hermoso and her teammates said the kiss was unwanted and demeaning.

Mr Rubiales was forced to resign, but has denied any wrongdoing.
