Liverpool extended the Premier League title fight to the final day of the season with a 2-1 comeback victory at Southampton

Liverpool extended the Premier League title fight to the final day of the season with a 2-1 comeback victory at Southampton thanks to goals from Takumi Minamino and Joel Matip.

The result puts them one point behind league-leading Manchester City heading into Sunday’s season finale.

In the 13th minute, Nathan Redmond sprinted the length of the field before curling a shot into the top corner to give the Saints the lead, putting the title aspirations of a significantly altered Liverpool team in jeopardy.

Former Southampton loanee Minamino, however, equalized from a tight angle after Joe Gomez and Diogo Jota played quick passes.

Jota and Harvey Elliott squandered opportunities to put Liverpool ahead early in the second half, but they secured a crucial three points when Matip headed in Konstantinos Tsimikas’ corner kick.

Liverpool is second with 89 points, while Southampton is 15th with 40, six points above the bottom three.
