Let us not politicise Masaka murders

Mpuuga made the remarks a day after police issued criminal summonses to two National Unity Platform (NUP) Members of Parliament (MPs) for allegedly knowing about the ongoing killings in Masaka.

Mathias Mpuuga, the Leader of the Opposition (LoP), has asked for professionalism, due process, and justice as the government deals with the current political insecurity in greater Masaka, where “Bijambiya” gangs have killed and injured a number of people.

Mpuuga made the remarks a day after police issued criminal summonses to two National Unity Platform (NUP) Members of Parliament (MPs) for allegedly knowing about the ongoing killings in Masaka.

Muhammed Ssegirinya of Kawempe North and Allan Ssewanyana of Makindye West are expected to appear in court.

Mpuuga cautioned the government not to use the current insecurity in greater Masaka to settle political scores, according to a statement obtained by The Nile Post.

“We expect professionalism from the Members of Parliament who have been summoned by the police, given their political leanings. Any attempt to employ shortcuts to solve a larger problem may not serve the victims and accused in the interests of justice,” Mpuuga added.

Professionalism, according to Mpuuga, will shatter what appears to be a rebirth of organized crime in which portions of the state security apparatus have been implicated.

“The situation in the region can only be defined as desperate since residents want to be protected from the current unrest. It is not the government’s place to act in haste, but rather to exercise the necessary caution in securing the community while avoiding approaches that tend to instill suspicion,” he stated.
