As schools resume next month, leaders in Bududa district have asked the government to speed up the relocation of mudslide victims.

After mudslides ravaged Bulucheke sub-county, more than 100 victims are still camping at Bumwalye Primary School.

Following the Ministry of Education’s announcement that schools would reopen on January 10, the leaders ask the Prime Minister’s Office to speed up the relocation program and make more space for students.

The LCIII chairperson for Bulucheke sub-county, Peter Masambu, says he is struggling to decide what to do for the victims because the sub-county lacks the resources to move them.

Attempts to make the victims leave the institution, according to Bududa Chief Administrative Officer Tappy Namulondo, have been ineffective.

The district disaster committee chairperson, Samson Natsambwa, said he received a call from the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) alerting him that OPM officials will be in the district to inspect and verify the extent of the damage to the victims’ property.

He urged those who were not immediately affected to wait while they hunt for host families and empty the school to allow the youngsters to return.
