According to Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the UPDF is in Somalia for peace, not treasure.

He remarked, "I want to congratulate you for your determination to serve not only your own country, but also a brotherly African country (Somalia)."

The Commander of the Land Forces (CLF), Lt Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has stated that the UPDF is not in Somalia under AMISOM for treasures or anything else, but rather to maintain peace in the Horn of Africa country.

“We are not fighting the Alshabaab in Somalia for gold, diamonds, or money; we are fighting for peace. Some may believe so, but our goal is to assist our brothers and sisters in achieving peace because we don’t want to see them suffer,” said Lt Gen Kainerugaba.

On Wednesday, the Commander Land Forces spoke with 2127 men from Battle Group 33 at the Singo Peace Support Training Centre (PSO-TC) in Nakaseke District, who are preparing to deploy to Somalia.

Lt Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba praised the soldiers for answering the noble call to duty.

He remarked, “I want to congratulate you for your determination to serve not only your own country, but also a brotherly African country (Somalia).”

To emphasize his point, Gen Kainerugaba used the example of a businessman who makes sacrifices for his own personal gain, whereas a soldier, on the other hand, makes sacrifices for his country.

A total of 1,846 soldiers will be deployed to Somalia early next month, out of a total of 2,127 who have been receiving pre-mission training at Singo.

In 2007, Uganda was the first country to send troops to Somalia as part of the AMISOM mission.

Before allowing other countries like Kenya, Ethiopia, and Burundi to send forces to Somalia, the UPDF’s deployment disproved the notion that AMISOM was a “dead on arrival” mission.

Ugandan troops have forced Al Shabaab militants almost 200 kilometers away from Mogadishu city after being deployed in Sector One in Benadir, (which includes 16 districts), Banadir, and Lower Shabelle regions.
