Kirunda, a court bailiff, has been remanded in custody for murder by a court martial.

The General Court Martial in Makindye has re-charged renowned court bailiff Moses Kirunda with the murder of city businessman Magid Mugwanya.

Kirunda, who is accused of demolishing St Peter’s Church in Ndeeba in 2020, appeared in Makindye Chief Magistrates Court last month and was held in Kitalya government prison.

The military prosecutions were reinstated before the General Court Martial after the Director of Public Prosecutions Jane Frances Abodo withdrew the charges in the Magistrates court on Monday.

As a result, Kirunda and his co-accused, Major Nelson Kyatuuka, appeared in court before Lt General Andrew Gutti, who read one count of murder to them.

The court heard that Kirunda and Kyatuuka, a UPDF officer linked to the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence -CMI, as well as those currently at large, were responsible for Mugwanya’s unlawful execution.

The alleged murder took place on July 14, 2021 in Kitanzi zone, Lungujja, Lubaga division, Kampala district, according to the prosecution.

Mugwanya, who had parked his car on the side of the road, allegedly spotted a woman screaming and pleading for help as she was being dragged by three guys into a waiting car late at night.

Mugwanya reportedly got out of his car to assist the woman, but he was shot in the chest by three armed men when he identified himself. According to the records, he died on the spot, and the suspects fled the scene.

However, Kirunda, who is 57 years old, and his co-accused have rejected the charges and have been remanded in Kitalya government prison until October 4th, 2021, while investigations continue.

Kirunda, who is accused of fleeing the scene of the incident, was apprehended by investigators from the State House Anti-Corruption Unit in Lungujja in August and brought before the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Makindye.
