.Harry Kane confirmed on Wednesday that he will stay at Tottenham Hotspur this season, putting an end to rumors over a possible move to Manchester City.
With 221, the 28-year-old is Tottenham’s second-highest goalscorer, although he has yet to win a major prize at club or international level.
Kane has made it obvious that he wanted to leave his boyhood club in order to end his trophy drought.
He does, however, have three years left on a six-year contract signed in 2018, allowing Spurs chairman Daniel Levy to demand a sum much in excess of the £100 million ($137 million) paid by City to Aston Villa for Jack Grealish earlier this month.
Kane returned late to pre-season training and missed his team’s 1-0 triumph over City on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.
However, when he made his first appearance of the season as a substitute in a 1-0 win against Wolves last Saturday, he was greeted warmly by the Tottenham fans.
“It was fantastic to watch the Spurs supporters’ greeting on Sunday and to read some of the messages of support I’ve received throughout the last several weeks,” he tweeted.
“I will remain at Tottenham this summer and will devote my entire attention to assisting the squad in achieving victory.”
Tottenham reportedly turned down a £125 million approach from Manchester City for their star striker.
Kane’s ability to fire Tottenham back into the Champions League next season will be a reward for Levy’s risk in declining that fee.
Between 2016/17 and 2019/20, Spurs won the Champions League four times in a row under previous manager Mauricio Pochettino, including reaching the final for the first time in the club’s history in 2018.
Tottenham’s decision to fire Pochettino in November 2019 and replace him with Jose Mourinho has backfired, with the club finishing sixth and seventh in the Premier League in the last two seasons.
In addition, Mourinho was unable to end Tottenham’s trophy drought, which began in 2008.
The pressure on Levy to keep Kane this summer increased as the search for Mourinho’s successor dragged on.
Nuno Espirito Santo was named coach on June 30, nearly three months after the former Chelsea manager was fired.
Spurs, on the other hand, have made the best of a difficult few months by winning both of their league games.
“Excellent news. “This is fantastic news,” Nuno remarked, hinting that Kane may return to the starting lineup against Pacos de Ferreira in the Europa Conference League playoff on Thursday.
“I believe Harry has been working since he joined us, so this is what we value.” His training attitude has been outstanding.
“It’s finished, and Harry will be joining us.” He’s a possibility for tomorrow. It’s fantastic news for everyone.”
Kane’s desire for personal glory may possibly keep him in north London for the long term.
He is only 45 goals behind Jimmy Greaves as Tottenham’s all-time leading goalscorer.
Kane was seen as a long-term replacement for Sergio Aguero at the Etihad.
And Aguero’s record of 184 Premier League goals for one club might be broken this season, with Kane getting 166 for Spurs.
