KACITA has announced a week-long protest against the textile tax.

Issa Ssekito, a representative for KACITA, said their stores would be locked starting Wednesday unless the government reverses the revised tax rate.

Following failed negotiations with the government over the new tax policy on textile materials and clothing, the Kampala City Traders Association-KACITA has called for a peaceful demonstration by traders.

Issa Ssekito, a representative for KACITA, said their stores would be locked starting Wednesday unless the government reverses the revised tax rate.

“It will be a nonviolent demonstration, as we promised, and our people are encouraged not to touch anyone’s property if we are to accomplish our intended outcome,” he stated at a hurriedly held press conference.

The dealers are opposed to the increase in the tax rate on imported fabrics from 25% to 35% on each kilogram.

After meeting with the State Minister for Trade, Uganda Revenue Authority, Kampala Resident City Commissioner, and Kampala Minister, KACITA made their announcement.

During the discussion, the government requested a week to settle the matter with its department, according to Ssekito.

“We’re planning to use that week to stage a protest against the policies and the accumulated rent arrears, which is also a burden on our shoulders.
