Justice Katureebe is new UMI Chancellor

Katureebe has been handed a four-year contract according to the Instrument dated June 6th 2021.

Former Chief Justice Bart Katureebe has been named as the next Chancellor of the Uganda Management Institute by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni (UMI).

Geraldine Namirembe Bitamazire, the second titular head of the Institution, will be replaced by Katureebe. Geraldine Namirembe Bitamazire was appointed in 2013 and was the second titular head of the Institution.

Katureebe has been handed a four-year contract according to the Instrument dated June 6th 2021.

The Instrument of Appointment reads, “In exercise of the powers conferred upon me by section 30(1) of the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act 2001 as amended, I, Yoweri Tibuhaburwa Kaguta Museveni do here by appoint Justice Bart M. Katureebe as Chancellor of Uganda Management Institute.” Katureebe was hired for another four years as a Candidate Member of the International Commercial Expert Committee of the Supreme People’s Court of China in December 2020, after retiring from the judiciary earlier in June after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70 for Ugandan Supreme Court Judges.

The committee, which was formed roughly three years ago, is responsible for ensuring that the China International Economic Court, an instrument of the Supreme People’s Court that handles international commercial disputes, operates fairly and effectively.

Its responsibilities include mediating international commercial disputes upon the parties’ request, providing expert opinion on applicable foreign laws and international conventions if entrusted by CICC, and advising on the commercial Court’s future development.

However, Katureebe, who had earlier stated that he was retiring to care for his goats, has taken up the post, and the contract will expire on December 8, 2024.

Alfonse Owiny Dollo, Katureebe’s successor, has consistently criticized the government for allowing Supreme Court Justices to retire at the age of 70 and then appointing retired judges to work in comparable capacities in other nations.

Some of Uganda’s senior court officials have left the country to work in other countries. Justice Egonda-Ntende, the former Chief Justice of the Seychelles, and Justice Duncan Gaswaga, the former Chief Justice of the Seychelles, are among them.
