“It’s a bait,” DP says of raising the salary of exclusively science professors.

Government proposals to raise compensation for only science instructors, according to the Democratic Party (DP), are a "trap" that teachers should not fall for.

Government proposals to raise compensation for only science instructors, according to the Democratic Party (DP), are a “trap” that teachers should not fall for.

Okoler Opio Lo Amanu, a DP spokesperson, said there is a purposeful plan to tear down teachers’ solidarity, and that they should take government commitments with a grain of salt.

On Tuesday, Okoler made these statements to media at the DP weekly news conference.

“It’s possible that it won’t be kept, just as the government’s many promises to teachers.” As a result, teachers should not allow themselves to be dissolved by this method, as it is a bait. “Don’t be fooled,” Okoler said.

According to Okoler, the initiative to establish pay disparities between arts and science teachers may be intended to break down their cohesion when they present their requests to the government.

According to the DP spokesman, if the government truly wants to improve the welfare of teachers, it should pay them all equally.

“It’s true that science teachers have a few more responsibilities than their counterparts in the arts,” he said, “but it doesn’t justify raising certain teachers’ wages while disregarding others.”

President Museveni and teachers failed to agree on compensation increases during World Instructors’ Day celebrations last week, with Museveni indicating he would only raise the salaries of scientific teachers.

The head of the National Teachers Union, Filbert Baguma, believes that increasing science teacher pay will destabilize school authority.

In response, Museveni stated that the government would like to raise teacher pay for all, but that they do not have the funds.

“Then we thought, why don’t we start with a few?” Teachers of science. Our plans have been carefully considered. “Don’t fight them,” Museveni cautioned.
