Insights from Fabrizio Romano:Liverpool Joins Race to Sign ‘World’s Best Talent’ as Klopp Expresses Keen Interest
According to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool have entered the race to sign Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz this summer.
In the 2020/21 season, the German attacking midfielder broke into the Leverkusen first team, scoring seven goals and providing ten assists in the Bundesliga.
He missed nine months of action due to a serious knee injury sustained in March, but he has scored four goals in nine league appearances since his return.
His return to full fitness has reignited interest in signing him this summer, with Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid both linked with a move for the 19-year-old.
According to Romano, Liverpool is now in the running to sign the Leverkusen wonderkid.
Liverpool is interested in signing Florian Wirtz.
Romano addressed the speculation surrounding the attacking midfielder in a video posted to his YouTube channel: “What I can tell you is that Barcelona is definitely following him; their people have been spending time following the player.
“Real Madrid is doing the same, so the two Spanish clubs are keeping an eye on the player.
“But I’m told that also English clubs are keeping an eye on Wirtz. Especially the situation of Liverpool is one to watch, because Liverpool are monitoring the player.
“I’m told that [Reds boss] Jurgen Klopp is said to be a big fan of Florian Wirtz, so they are among many clubs monitoring the player.”
Romano also described the Germany international as ‘one of the world’s top talents’ – and he was recently compared to Lionel Messi by his current Leverkusen boss, and Liverpool legend, Xabi Alonso.
Speaking to reporters in January the Spaniard said: “Why is Messi so good? Because he knows how and when to play simple passes.
“Messi says, ‘You’re in a better position? Here, there you have the ball!’ It’s not always about making the most brilliant move, but the best and smartest. Florian can do that. That’s why he’s so good.”
