An inmate at the Maluku government prison in Mbale area has died while incarcerated.

Abudu Omodo, 39, has been identified as the dead. On Thursday morning, his body was discovered in one of the prison cells.

According to Rogers Taitika, the Elgon Region Police Spokesperson, Omodo began vomiting while in custody, but was pronounced dead shortly after being sent to the prison health clinic.

He goes on to say that on-duty jail warders have already given statements to the Mbale Central Police Station, which will aid in the inquiry.

Taitika also verified that the body had been transferred to the Mbale city mortuary for a post-mortem examination.

An inmate died at the Mutufu government prison in Sironko district last month. Peter Manyasi, a 39-year-old Bugiri native, was killed.

According to prison officials, the deceased suffered an ailment and was treated by the jail’s medical staff.
