Evans, who advanced to the fourth round of the US Open last month, came back from a 5-2 deficit in the first set to win it, then maintained his momentum in the second set to break the Argentine 11th seed’s service in the first game.
In the second set, though, Schwartzman came back to tie the match by converting four of six break points. Evans was never able to regain his footing in the third set, as Schwartzman only dropped two first-serve points.
John Isner, the 20th seed, withdrew from his third-round match against Jannik Sinner on Tuesday to travel home for the birth of his third child.
