Lt. Col. Ariko Robert, 54, a senior officer in the UPDF, was apprehended in Katakwi while attempting to sell ivory.

Ariko was apprehended in Africa village, Getom subcounty, Katakwi district.

The suspect is a member of the 43rd battalion.

UWA, the Uganda Police Force, and the Natural Resource Conservation Network launched a joint investigation a month ago to find the army official who was allegedly selling wildlife parts.

This morning, the undercover investigators, posing as buyers, were led to Ariko’s house by an anonymous tip.

The suspect greeted the “customers” who insisted on confirming the product before engaging in any negotiations.

Ariko drove the “customers” to his home, where the products they wanted to see were kept in a Starlet UAG 464 E vehicle. Ariko was apprehended after the ivory was discovered in the vehicle’s trunk.

He is being held at Katakwi Central Police Station (CPS).
