In Gulu, a police officer was arrested after a suspect escaped.
On Saturday, Ouma was detained in Pece-Kabedopong Laroo's market on charges of breaking into three businesses owned by Gladys Mary Alanyo, Lyazi Ismail, and Ibrahim Asimwe, all market sellers.
Following the escape of a suspect from police custody, a police officer in Gulu was arrested.
Special Police Constable Leobenik Ojok is accused of causing Emmanuel Ouma’s escape while on duty at Gulu Central Police Station.
On Saturday, Ouma was detained in Pece-Kabedopong Laroo’s market on charges of breaking into three businesses owned by Gladys Mary Alanyo, Lyazi Ismail, and Ibrahim Asimwe, all market sellers.
He allegedly stole two sacks of women’s shoes, one sack of women’s handbags, two pillows, six packs of laundry soap, many rolls of curtain, and a blanket, among other things. Ouma was apprehended with some of the stolen articles and battered by a mob numerous times before being rescued by the police and taken to Gulu Central Police Station.
Ouma, however, leaped over the cell wall and bolted while being carried for treatment to Gulu Regional Referral Hospital under the watchful eye of Ojok, the cell guard.
Efforts to apprehend him were futile as his pursuers could not get hold of him.
The Police Professional Standard Unit in Aswa River Region however on Monday faulted Ojok for neglect of duty, arrested him and he is currently being detained at the Gulu Central Police Station as inquiries continue.
David Ongom Mudong, the Aswa River Region Police Spokesperson said on Tuesday morning that the police officer is currently under detention and relieved of his duty until investigations are completed.
He added that Ouma had been charged with burglary and theft vide SD ref. 43/04/09/2021 and will now face more charges of escape from lawful custody.
