In Bududa, the Red Cross gives relief items to 200 families.

The Uganda Red Cross has provided a variety of assistance goods to households in Bududa area who have lately been affected by landsides.

The distribution event, which took place at Bulucheke Playground, was targeted at helping 200 families, totaling 1200 people, who had been identified as the most vulnerable by the local authorities.

Officials say that each family will receive a nonfood relief item kit that includes two Jerricans, a 46-meter tarpaulin, two blankets, two mosquito nets, a bar of soap, water purification tabs, cups, plates, cooking pans, serving ladle, sleeping mats, solar lamps, and menstrual hygiene management kits for women and girls.

Agnes Nandutu, a woman MP from Bududa, praised the Red Cross for consistently cooperating with the government to respond to disasters in Bududa and other parts of the nation, speaking at the opening of the distribution exercise.

“The Uganda Red Cross is one of the organizations with whom the Prime Minister’s Office collaborates closely to reduce and manage disasters in the country.” I am pleased to report that whenever there is a disaster in Bududa, the Red Cross is one of the first organizations on the scene to assist the district in conducting assessments, rescuing the victims, and saving lives. We’ve been united since the 2010 calamities and continue to do so today. We’ve also seen the Red Cross respond to other situations, such as road traffic accidents and COVID-19, among others. “Thank you,” she added, “and keep up the fantastic work.”

The Bududa Woman MP also pledged to expedite the National Disaster Law, which the Red Cross is developing in collaboration with the Ugandan government.

The Uganda Red Cross Secretary, Robert Kwesiga, praised the Prime Minister’s Office and the Bududa district leadership for collaborating with them to establish a disaster management committee that has improved emergency response for life-threatening calamities.

“We are relieved that no lives were lost in this large landslide as a result of the early warning system in place in Bududa and throughout the mountain Elgon region.” We appreciate the district and the Prime Minister’s office recognizing our efforts to community preparedness. This aids in the development of resilient communities. “Let us continue to strengthen the mechanisms so that we can have a better response mechanism and stronger communities,” added Kwesiga.

“At the end of the day, we want to save lives.” Providing opportunities for us to help those affected by disasters in any form, such as today, is part of creating an enabling environment for us to carry out our mission. Special gratitude to all of the partners who contributed to our larger response.”
