In a raid on criminal gangs in Kampala, police have arrested 68 people.

In a police raid in Kampala’s core business center, 68 suspected criminals were apprehended.

The offenders were apprehended on Wednesday morning in Kisenyi and Nakivubo channel by Field Force Police-FFP personnel from the Old Kampala and Central Police stations.

Following complaints from residents and business owners in the Nakivubo and Kisenyi regions regarding open-air thievery, police stepped into action.

According to Luke Owoyesigyire, a spokesman for the Kampala Metropolitan Metropolitan Deputy Police, several mugging victims have filed multiple cases after losing their stuff to crooks who frequently try to shove them into the Nakivubo water channel.

“It is claimed that the canal serves as a haven for thieves who kidnap, rob, and attack their victims before fleeing back to the channel.” They’ll be probed for aggravated and simple robberies and arraigned in court as soon as possible, according to Owoyesigire. He claims that several of the accused were carried through the water trench by underwater pipes and black patches.

One of the victims from Nankulabye, Joseph Kyeyune, told detectives at the Old Kampala police station that thugs attacked him in a traffic jam near the Aga Khan schools in Kampala on September 26th, 2021, as he returned from Entebbe.

According to Kyeyune’s account, the attackers shattered his windscreen with stones and grabbed his bag, which contained Shillings 3 million and his phones, which was in the vehicle. The operation came only days after another in Makindye division resulted in the arrest of 58 persons in connection with a series of robberies.

On Thursday last week, a team of officers from the Katwe south police division launched an operation in Masaja, Salaama, Mutundwe, and Bunamwaya, all in Makindye. It came after multiple reports of escalating attacks by unknown thugs on vehicles, pedestrians, and residences.
