According to the fuel firm, one of the victims of last week’s explosion at a Vivo Energy storage in Kampala has died as a result of his injuries.

An explosion rocked the Kampala depot for the distributor and marketer of Shell branded fuels and lubricants, sending at least 110 people to the hospital.

However, according to Vivo Energy’s most recent statement, one of the victims died of fire burns in a Nairobi hospital where he had been transported for treatment.

“With great grief, Vivo Energy Uganda, the company that distributes and advertises Shell products and services, can report that Mr. Yasin Lwanyaga, an employee of our contractor Fred Ssebyala, has passed away.”

“Unfortunately, a victim of the recent fire incident at our Kampala Depot, Transporters (FST) Limited, has passed away this morning at Nairobi Hospital, where he had been referred for specialized treatment,” Vivo Energy Corporate Communications Manager Val Oketcho said in a statement on Monday afternoon.

The company stated that they would support the deceased driver’s family during this difficult time.

Eight of the remaining ten victims of the explosion who were admitted to the International Hospital of Kampala for treatment of injuries experienced during the incident have already been discharged, according to Vivo.

“Currently, two people are in the ICU and one is on the ward. These patients are still in good health. We’re keeping an eye on their condition to make sure they get the greatest therapy and medical care possible.”

The company stated that it is working closely with authorities to investigate the fire and guarantee that it does not happen again.

“We’re continuing to work closely with the appropriate authorities to figure out what caused the incident.”

To reduce the danger of a repeat incident, we will ensure that lessons are learned and shared throughout our Ugandan employees, other local OMCs, and the Vivo Energy Group as a whole.”
