Government of Uganda suspends 54 NGOs, CCEDU affected
The election saw President Yoweri Museveni returned for a sixth term in office after a violent campaign marked by the harassment and arrest of opposition figures, attacks on the media and the deaths of several dozen people.
The Ugandan government announced on Friday that 54 non-governmental organizations had been shut down, marking a significant step forward in the country’s efforts to tighten control over civil society.
Chapter Four, the country’s most notable human rights organization, is one of the groups affected.
The shutdown was ordered “with immediate effect,” according to the National Bureau for NGOs, which is part of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
The decision was made because the groups had broken the law governing their activities, such as operating with expired permits, failing to file accounts, or failing to register with the authorities, according to the statement.
On election day in January, some of the organizations forced to close took part in an election monitoring operation that was raided by security agents and several of their leaders arrested.
After a violent campaign that included harassment and arrests of opposition figures, attacks on the media, and the deaths of several dozen people, President Yoweri Museveni was re-elected for a sixth term.
