Otto Addo immediately announced his resignation as Black Stars coach during a press conference in Ghana after Ghana was eliminated from the World Cup.
Being under contract with Borussia Dortmund (as a talent scout), his departure was anticipated and will allow him to resume his work for the remaining period of his agreement with the German powerhouse.

At a press conference on December 5, the former Bundesliga midfielder gave the following explanation: “Our outcomes have nothing to do with my choice. Even if we had become world champions, our pact would have come to an end.”
Addo reaffirmed his role as Dortmund’s talent coach in no uncertain terms, and he also gave the Ghanaian FA credit for their tenacious efforts in negotiating a contract with Dortmund that will provide him a six-month coaching contract with the Black Stars. The brief coaching position for his native country, he said, was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and he is still proud to have accepted it. A future reunion with the Black Stars is a possibility, he added, but at least not in the near future.
After losing 2-0 to Uruguay in the group H championship game, the former Ghanaian international, who had been assistant coach with the Black Stars since September and had been elevated to coach since February, was unable to advance his team through the group stage.
Following the resignations of Gerardo Martino of Mexico and Roberto Martnez of Belgium, Addo was the third head coach at the World Cup to step down.
