As he returned to the club as interim manager, Frank Lampard told Chelsea fans he is “forever grateful” for their support.
The 44-year-old is back at Stamford Bridge until the end of the season as a short-term replacement for Graham Potter, with the club still in talks with Julian Naglesmann and Luis Enrique about taking the job permanently.
Lampard’s priority is to quickly improve the mood at Chelsea, which is currently 11th in the Premier League after a miserable season.
The Blues still have a chance to end the season on a high note, as they face Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals. Next week, Chelsea will travel to Spain for the first leg.
Lampard’s return to the club comes just a few months after he was sacked by Everton with the club in relegation trouble, and two years after the end of his first spell in charge at Chelsea, when Thomas Tuchel took over and led the Blues to European glory.
Lampard spoke of his close bond with Chelsea fans at his press conference on Thursday after his appointment was confirmed, but he also sent a message to any fans who were disappointed to see him back in the Stamford Bridge dugout.
“I’m grateful for those who are happy,” Lampard said. “If there are some who are not, they can be assured that I will give my all.”
“I don’t think I need to go into too much detail about my relationship with Chelsea fans.” They have been a huge support to me since I first joined many years ago, and I will be eternally grateful.”
