Charles Peter Mayiga, the Katikkiro of Buganda, has demanded the government to release opposition sympathizers who were detained following a recent series of violence in the Greater Masaka subregion that left many people dead.
Mayiga made the statements during a Christmas ceremony at Masaka’s Kitovu Cathedral, where he was joined by other dignitaries, including Opposition Leader Mathias Mpuuga.
The Katikkiro, who consoled the residents of Greater Masaka who had lost loved ones, slammed the police for detaining those dressed in red rather than focusing on the robbers and other criminal gangs spreading havoc in the area.
“We demand that the police step up their efforts to apprehend thieves and other criminals. We don’t want police to arrest solely people wearing red. “If there are those clad in red, police will respond as quickly as possible,” he stated. “However, we want police to capture the criminals who have been terrorizing the people so that Buganda can reclaim its position.”
He ordered the administration to inform the public about the reason for the deaths and to use technological expertise in conducting investigations to ensure that the murderers are apprehended.
“We want to know the truth about the machete-wielding individuals who have been murdering people in different districts since 2017.” “There have been people arrested, but we don’t know anything about their problems,” he said.
Allan Ssewanyana and Muhammad Ssegirinya, both members of the opposition, were detained on suspicion of masterminding the attacks, which killed 26 people.
Both legislators are still incarcerated.
Mpuuga urged citizens to join hands in order to free the country from President Museveni’s control.
“There are a lot of things going on, so we need to find a solution to our difficulties.” He stated, “We must liberate this land.”
