Following fan protests and pitch invasions against a penalty judgment in the eighth minute of added time, Onduparaka’s StarTimes Uganda Premier League match versus KCCA FC was called off.
The game at the AbaBet Green Light Stadium was almost over when home fans were irritated by referee Ronald Madanda’s decision to award a penalty to the visitors.
Some Onduparaka fans stormed the pitch, demonstrating their displeasure with the decision by throwing bottles of water at assistant referee Micheal Kalule, causing the penalty to be delayed.
The incident occurred when defender Ahmed Amayo and KCCA forward Brian Aheebwa collided just inside the box in what appeared to be an innocent and fair collision.
Police and military police were called in to help defuse the situation as negotiations about whether or not to continue the game went on. Ultimately, it was decided that the game could not be finished.
We’ll have to wait for the Federation of Uganda Football Association’s (FUFA) Competitions Disciplinary panel’s judgment, but Onduparaka could face penalties such as forfeiting the game and losing three points on top of the ones they already have.
Once taken, the penalty would have been the game’s final kick and piece of action, capping up an enthralling contest with plenty of drama throughout the 90 minutes.
After the Kasasiro Boys failed to deal with a corner, defender Rashid Okocha – who had been suspended – volleyed a right foot shot into the top corner to give the Caterpillars the lead.
The first touch of drama occurred just before halftime, when Madanda gave the hosts a penalty, which KCCA vigorously protested, after the ball appeared to have bounced off Ashraf Mugume’s arm.
At the stroke of halftime, Muhammad Shaban stepped up to send goalkeeper Benjamin Ochan the wrong way and restore parity.
Except for Jimmy Ndalamba’s red card for time wasting in the first minute of added time, the second half passed without incident.
Following rivals Vipers SC’s 7-2 annihilation of UPDF FC at the St. Mary’s Stadium in Kitende, KCCA loses their lead at the top of the league.
Vipers won their fourth consecutive league game with to goals from Bright Anukani, Milton Karisa, Yunus Ssentamu, Emmanuel Munoobi, Bobosi Byaruhanga, and Cesar Manzoki’s double.
SC Villa also made quick work of bottom-placed Tooro United, handing them their 11th straight loss.
At the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru, Salim Abdallah scored the first goal for the Jogoo, followed by goals from Nicholas Kabonge, Benson Muhindo, and Goffin Oyirwoth.
