Daniel Isabirye, a retail metal stall operator in Buwenge sub-county, was detained and reportedly tortured by police officers enforcing the curfew at Magamaga commercial center on the Jinja-Kamuli highway two weeks ago.

Isabirye claims that despite telling police officials that he was in agony in his back, they proceeded to beat him and held him for four days in the Magamaga police station.

The victim’s father, James Badagawa, claims that his son was battered on the head and requires specialist care, but that they are unable to pay the medical expenses because they are financially unable to do so.

Badagawa further claims that during Isabirye’s incarceration, several police officers demanded that they pay a 200,000 Shillings charge to be released. The mother, Margret Badagawa, believes that the police should examine the incident and arrest the policemen involved. She goes on to say that the family requires 1.5 million Shillings to cover Isabirye’s medical expenses.

Isabirye was held at their police station, according to Kiira region police spokesperson James Mubi. However, he refused to provide any further information, stating that his torture allegations are still being investigated.
