Express FC, Uganda’s representatives, created history on Saturday by winning the CECAFA 2021 cup for the first time.

The Uganda Premier League champions had to overcome guest side Nyasa Big Bullets from Malawi, thanks to a Martin Kizza first-half goal, to lift the trophy in the event held in Tanzania.

Express FC not only won the event for the first time in history, but they also made their first appearance in the football competition for clubs from East and Central Africa in 26 years.

Express FC coach Wasswa Bbosa spoke on the achievement, saying that despite arriving at the tournament unprepared, his squad improved with each game and eventually won.

“This is the second time I’ve brought Express FC to this competition, and it’s a huge accomplishment that we’ve won it this time. It’s a major deal for my coaching resume,” Bbosa added.

After KCCA FC won the last tournament in Kigali in 2019, Express winning the 2021 event gives Ugandan representatives a back-to-back title.

They won shs106 million in cash for winning the competition, which was sponsored by Rwandan President Paul Kagame.
