On Tuesday, the European Union (EU) handed delivered a variety of supplies to Nakawa Market merchants in conjunction with Cities Alliance Uganda to help enhance cleanliness in the market.

2 water tanks, 30 tents, 400 tarpaulins, liquid soap, 6000 masks, and sanitary pads were among the supplies.

During the handover, Jan van der Ploeg Johannes, EU Operations Advisor Infrastructure, stated that the donation is a very valuable intervention that would address the market’s current sanitation concerns.

He urged Cities Alliance and market leaders to provide the conditions that will allow people to adjust their habits and standards in order to improve sanitation and sewage management.

“It’s a pleasure to be able to provide the necessary equipment as well as goods and materials.” We funded it, and it will be a great joy for us if the Nakawa Market and its administration, in collaboration with the KCCA and the Mayor, do their best to make it work as well as possible in the future,” Johannes remarked.

Paul Mugambe, the Mayor of Nakawa, praised the EU for being helpful and supportive of Nakawa market sellers who are trying to improve their living by running small companies.

“I believe the European Union has been a wonderful working partner with the Ugandan government, and it is our responsibility as individuals or organizations under local government to continue this partnership.”
