Enrique believes PSG can improve much farther.
Despite leading Ligue 1 and making it to the round of 16, Paris St. Germain's manager Luis Enrique stated on Saturday that there is still much more to come from the group.
Despite leading Ligue 1 and making it to the round of 16, Paris St. Germain’s manager Luis Enrique stated on Saturday that there is still much more to come from the group.
They hold a four-point lead in Ligue 1 and advanced to the Champions League knockout round thanks to a 1-1 draw against Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday. The coach anticipates more improvement.
“There is no question in my mind that we will improve. As the months have gone by, all of my teams have gotten better,” Luis Enrique said during a news conference.
“We are open to the transfer window and the possibility of bringing in players, and I am confident that we will have players returning from significant injuries in February.” Why then would I act cynically or like the victim? It is my tendency to be an optimist.”
PSG trailed Dortmund in Group F, but the Spaniard is happy with his team’s performance considering the group’s difficulty, which also featured AC Milan and Newcastle United.
“If you look at the team statistics, we are leaders in almost every key aspect, possession, chances, expected goals,” remarked Luis Enrique.
“While we are undoubtedly among the greatest teams, in the group stage we played opponents that you may see in the quarterfinals, semifinals, or last sixteen.
“Given that this wasn’t your typical Champions League group, I am naturally enthusiastic. It was the hardest one in the tournament. We’ve succeeded in becoming eligible.”
UPSET MBAPPE
Towards the conclusion of PSG’s match against Dortmund, Kylian Mbappe was clearly annoyed with the team’s cautious strategy.
If PSG had lost to Milan versus Newcastle, they would have been eliminated from the competition.
Following the draw, Luis Enrique expressed his sympathy for Mbappe and stated he had instructed his team to take less chances.
“Of course, I understand the players and I understand they are exposed to emotions when they play,” he stated.
“I am the Coach. Milan won 2-1 against Newcastle late on, so it was a major choice. We may take chances by scoring again.
“We had to be completely concentrated. In these scenarios, it is possible to make a mistake. In this circumstance, my team and I made the right option.”
PSG travels to Lille on Sunday, where they are unbeaten in their past nine league games and have topped their Europa Conference League group without losing in six games.
“I think they’ve been unbeaten since September 26th, to be precise,” Luis Enrique stated of Reims’ 2-1 home defeat.
“I believe they have the second best defense (after Nice).” We’re playing at their stadium, and they’re an aggressive squad, so it’ll be one of the toughest games in the league.”
PSG leads second-placed Nice, who host mid-table Le Havre later on Saturday, by nine points, with Lille behind by nine points.
