EAC Heads of State Summit Directs Immediate Ceasefire in Eastern DR Congo

His Excellency Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is in Bujumbura, Burundi, for the 20th Extra-Ordinary Summit of East African Community Heads of State.

The President arrived at the Melchior Ndadaye International Airport and went straight to State House Bujumbura.

President Museveni was greeted by his host, H.E Gen Évariste Ndayishimiye, and promptly signed the visitors’ book before being led to the summit room.

All East African Heads of State were present, with the exception of H.E Salva Kiir, who was represented by the Minister of East African Affairs, Hon Deng Alor Kuol.

Before the closed-door meeting, the host and current Chairman of the EAC summit, H.E President Evariste Ndayishimiye, stated the conference’s purpose.

“The meeting’s main objective is to analyze the present situation in Eastern DRC in order to make choices that will improve the security situation and ease the restoration of peace and security in Eastern DRC,” he stated.

Following the secret session, the Heads of State released a statement in which they instructed all parties to immediately cease firing.

It also instructed the departure of all foreign armed groups and directed the heads of defense forces to convene within one week to define new pullout dates and recommend an acceptable deployment matrix.

This procedure will be accompanied by discourse, and any infractions must be notified to the summit’s Chairperson for urgent deliberation with summit members.
