13 November 2022, Arusha, Tanzanian Republic of the United Nations: The East African Community (EAC) Facilitator on the Peace Process in the Eastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), H.E. President Uhuru Kenyatta, departed for Kinshasa for high-level consultations with DRC’s President, H.E. Félix Tshisekedi, on November 13th and 14th, 2022, as the quest for peace in the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) continues to gain momentum as a top priority
President of the Republic of Burundi and Chairperson of the Summit of EAC Heads of State, H.E. Évariste Ndayishimiye, will also participate in the discussions. Dr. Peter Mathuki, Secretary General of the EAC, will also accompany the facilitator on the two-day mission in the DRC.
The inter-Congolese dialogue under the EAC-led peace process has been revitalized to include local DRC community leaders and stakeholders in order to resolve the protracted security situation comprehensively.
The meeting takes place one week after the Summit of EAC Heads of State held a High-Level Consultative Meeting on the peace process in Eastern DRC in Shamar El Sheikh, Egypt, on the sidelines of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP-27), with the intention of strengthening the political track.
On 4 November 2022, H.E. Kenyatta met with President Ndayishimiye in Burundi to discuss the peace process in Eastern DRC.
The meeting, presided over by H.E. Évariste Ndayishimiye, the Chairperson of the Summit of EAC Heads of State and President of the Republic of Burundi, resolved that all seven EAC Partner States will now be fully involved in the process, with each Head of State providing a technical advisor to assist the Facilitator of the EAC Peace Process.
The Presidents of Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, and the United Republic of Tanzania reaffirmed their commitment to contribute to the EAC Special Fund for the implementation of the peace process and urged all Partner States to sustainably support the facility.
Currently, the African Union and the International Conference On The Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) have contributed to the EAC’s peace fund.
The EAC will hold a Peace Summit at the end of the year in order to, among other things, strengthen the complementary roles of the EAC-led peace process and the Luanda Process.
The next session of the peace dialogue regarding the security situation in Eastern DRC is scheduled to begin in Nairobi, Kenya on November 21, 2022.
