‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ tops North American box office on debut weekend

The film's successful debut was acclaimed by Hollywood and US news sites.

According to studio numbers given by measurement firm ComScore on Sunday, Disney’s presentation of Marvel’s superhero picture “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” earned the top spot at the North American box office on its opening weekend, with a three-day estimate of 185 million US dollars.

It’s the highest opening weekend of any film released in North America this year, and the second best of the COVID-19 pandemic era, trailing only another superhero film, “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” which debuted with a staggering 260 million dollars at the end of last year.

The movie is based on Marvel Comics’ Doctor Strange and is the sequel to 2016’s “Doctor Strange.” The film stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olsen, Benedict Wong, Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Xochitl Gomez, and is directed by Sam Raimi.

The film’s successful debut was acclaimed by Hollywood and US news sites.

CNBC described Shawn Robbins, chief analyst at the Box-office website, as saying that the picture “showcases the global appetite for big-screen events, premium formats, and shared experiences in a movie theater.”
