After his finances were cleared by the taxman, David Beckham is in line for a knighthood.
The 46-year-old former England captain is expected to be formally nominated and added to the official recommendations list for next June.
It comes eight years after he was caught up in a tax evasion operation. The taxman changed his status from red to green, allowing him to be recognized.
After a long-running tax saga, the Manchester United and Three Lions icon has finally become eligible to be a Sir.
MPs and charity activists hailed the move last night, calling it “well overdue” for one of England’s most successful players — and a prolific charity fundraiser.
Becks was banned by the Inland Revenue ten years ago after being detected in the Ingenious tax dodging scheme.
However, the firm won a multi-million pound appeal against HMRC in August, and Beckham’s representatives met tax officials to settle his finances.
“David, like many of the celebrities involved with Ingenious, had no idea what was going on at the time,” a source added.
“His staff initially aggressively approached HMRC almost two years ago, when David became self-employed, and then ultimately got everything settled this year.”
“David was told in 2013 that the sole reason he wasn’t knighted was because of the tax scandal. Now that the situation has been resolved, there is no reason why he should not be honored.
“A knighthood would undoubtedly make him ecstatic — but he’s not fooled, and he’ll believe it when he sees it.”
‘Long overdue,’ says the author.
The Inland Revenue issues a “red warning” to anyone who has financial problems.
However, David has been upgraded from red to green for his heroics for England, which included a miraculous goal against Greece that qualified us for the 2002 World Cup.
The father of four is thought to be on the official recommendations list, which means he has been satisfactorily vetted and is eligible for recognition. He has raised over £50 million for charity.
The Honours Committee, chaired by Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries, will now decide whether or not to formally endorse his candidacy for the Queen’s Birthday Honours in June. Victoria Beckham, his former Spice Girl wife, would be dubbed Lady Beckham.
The celebrity, who was instrumental in helping London hold the 2012 Olympic Games, may, however, be overlooked.
Captain Sir Tom Moore’s family, who earned millions for the NHS by running laps around his yard, applauded the action last night.
Becks paid a visit to the war hero, who died earlier this year at the age of 100, and presented him with an FA-backed award.
“We’re happy David is finally in line to earn a knighthood – something he richly deserves,” Hannah Ingram-Moore, co-founder of The Captain Tom Foundation, told The Sun.
“We will never forget David and his family’s kindness and support for my late father and our family.”
David also assisted The Sun in launching its poppy campaign last year, visiting Chelsea Pensioners to help boost sales during the pandemic. He also attended our Who Cares Wins awards with Prince William earlier this year.
“As someone who has been extremely critical of players in the past, I genuinely think this is long overdue for David Beckham,” Tory MP Andrew Bridgen remarked last night.
“He’s paid his taxes, raised millions of dollars for various charities, and was, of course, essential in our Olympic bid.”
It comes two years after The Sunday Times revealed that David and Victoria were among the top taxpayers in the UK, paying £12.7 million in a single year.
He was criticized earlier this year for agreeing to serve as an ambassador for Qatar ahead of next year’s World Cup. The Middle Eastern country has been widely chastised for its abysmal human rights records and homosexuality prohibition.
He, on the other hand, dismissed criticism of the £150 million, ten-year contract, stating that he aims to “use football as a force for good” and bring about change “from inside.”
‘He accomplishes more than most people realize.’
“David has been a Unicef Goodwill Ambassador for the past 18 years, and has worked hard for the children of the world,” a source close to David’s charity work said last night.
“This year, he was the face of their global vaccine campaign, and he raises roughly £5 million a year to support them, on top of the women’s and children’s programs he funds through his 7 Fund.”
He has undoubtedly generated over £50 million for Unicef and other charities over the years, and he also quietly donates roughly a million pounds a year from his own pocket.
“He does a lot more than people realize – even when he was in lockdown, he was volunteering for Age UK and visiting the Chelsea Pensioners.” It’s not only about the money; it’s also about the time he devotes.
And everyone knows how much of a royalist David is: he’s close to Prince William, adores the Queen, and has backed William’s mental health crusade.
“At this point, he’s not expecting much — but to be honored now would go beyond anything he could have imagined.”
140 celebrities participated in the Ingenious schemes, which provided tax incentives to film investors, including Ant & Dec, Robbie Williams, Guy Ritchie, Davina McCall, and Andrew Lloyd Webber.
The firm was using “sideways loss relief,” which allowed investors to offset their future tax bill against losses made in other areas, according to the firm, which has long denied tax cheating.
HMRC said the arrangement was a form of tax avoidance and sought £700 million in restitution, which Ingenious successfully challenged in the summer.
David, also known as Goldenballs, was publicly humiliated in 2017 after private emails he sent to his then-advisers were released. He responded bitterly to being passed over for a knighthood in 2013, writing to the Honours Committee.
Beckham was given an OBE for services to football in 2003, after playing 115 times for England and serving as captain for six years.
Victoria, his boys Brooklyn and Romeo, and his grandparents were present as he got it from the Queen at Buckingham Palace.
