Dam failures in northeast Brazil are threatening to exacerbate flooding.

Two dams in northeastern Brazil have collapsed, risking more flooding in a rain-soaked region where hundreds have already been forced to flee their homes.

This past weekend, the city governments of Jussiape and Itambe issued social media alerts asking citizens to seek safety.

Since early November, severe rains have produced floods in Bahia, killing 18 people and affecting at least 50 cities, according to the state government’s press office. Flooding has left more than 16.000 people homeless, 19,500 displaced, and two persons missing, according to the report.
