John Baptist Nambeshe, the Opposition Chief Whip in Parliament, narrowly avoided being murdered by an enraged crowd yesterday after colliding with an unidentified bike in an accident in Njeru township, Buikwe region.
Nambeshe, who was driving from Kampala to his constituency on Saturday, is accused of knocking over and injuring a person before fleeing the scene.
Some eyewitnesses claimed Nambeshe refused to stop after realizing he had knocked someone down, but a boda boda rider chased him down until he was caught.
According to an eye witness, the mob repeatedly smashed Nambeshe’s car and threatened to set it on fire, but police intervened quickly and the politician was spared from the mob.
Later, he was transported to the police station to provide a statement.
“While driving to my constituency of Manjiya in Kampala, I was involved in a small accident near Mbikko-Njeru Municipality on the Kampala-Mbale route (Bududa district). Nambeshe subsequently wrote, “I survived without a single injury, and my driver is also safe.”
