Crested Cranes Are 2022 CECAFA Senior Women’s Championship Winners

The Uganda Women's National Football Team (Crested Cranes) have won the 2022 CECAFA Senior Women's Championship after defeating Burundi in the final at the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru on Saturday.

The Uganda Women’s National Football Team (Crested Cranes) have won the 2022 CECAFA Senior Women’s Championship after defeating Burundi in the final at the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru on Saturday.

Uganda won the tournament for the first time, 3-1, in front of Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among, the Speaker of Parliament of Uganda, who served as the Guest of Honour.

Sandra Nabweteme scored a hat trick for Uganda, while Fazila Ikwaput scored the other goal. Burundi’s consolation came from Joelle Bukuru, a lanky midfielder.

Uganda got off to a good start and seized the lead in the second minute when Nabweteme scored past goalie Amissa Inarukundo.

Ikwaput scored the game’s second goal two minutes before halftime, dribbling past defender Diane Irankunda and the goalkeeper before scoring into an empty net.

Burundi got off to a fast start in the second half, with Joelle Bukuru scoring four minutes after the break.

Despite their best efforts, Uganda managed to hold out until Nabweteme scored deep into stoppage time to put the game out of reach.

In the game played before the final, Ethiopia defeated Tanzania 2-1 to take bronze.

Ethiopia’s Turist Lema and Tadesse Bizuayehu each scored a goal, while Tanzania earned a consolation goal from Opa Clement, the tournament’s leading scorer with seven goals.

Individual Achievement Awards

Fazila Ikwpaut, MVP (Uganda)

Opa Clement (Tanzania) was the top scorer with seven goals.

Daisy Nakaziro was named best goalkeeper (Uganda)

Tanzania receives the Fairplay Award.

Uganda became victorious.

Burundi came in second place.

Ethiopia came in second place as the runner-up.
