Connie Nakayenze Galiwango was declared the duly elected Woman MP for Mbale City after Lydia Wanyoto filed an election appeal with the Court of Appeal, but it was rejected.
Lydia Wanyoto’s appeal was rejected by the three justices of the Court of Appeal on the grounds that it was filed after the deadline by Elizabeth Musoke, Eva Luswata, and Christopher Madrama.
Lydia Wanyoto filed a petition with the Mbale High Court shortly after the 2021 general elections to challenge Galiwango’s election as the Mbale City Woman Member of Parliament, claiming that the election was marred by widespread fraud that was allegedly orchestrated by Ms. Galiwango and the electoral commission. The court dismissed the petition with costs, though.
At the Court of Appeal, MP Galiwango expressed her happiness with the dismissal of the election challenge.
“I won her with over 15000 votes, how can I steal with such a margin, am delighted I have been exonerated, this was a win for the people of Mbale, I thank them for electing me, I have gone through a lot, it has been a long journey,” she continued, adding that she has never rigged a vote.
