Hospitalizations for coronavirus are rising in Italy

Rome, Italy | BAZZUP | Official data released on Monday indicates that coronavirus-related hospitalizations are once again increasing in Italy. This can indicate that there will be an increase in instances this coming winter.

The number of patients in intensive care units increased by about 22% for the week ending November 17, according to the Gimbe Foundation, a health monitoring organization. The increase in admissions to intensive care units was greater than the general increase in coronavirus-related hospital admissions, which rose by almost 10% during the same time period.

Around 208,000 coronavirus infections overall were reported during the same time period, up from 181,000 the week prior. This is a 15% increase. Despite this, there were 2.9 fewer deaths per week.

According to Nino Cartabellotta, head of the Gimbe Foundation, “with the virus’s spread on the rise, we anticipate the government will shortly unveil a plan of action for the winter.”

Cartabellotta and other top health officials have been warning people to exercise caution as the weather cools and more activities migrate indoors, which will let the virus spread more easily.

Orazio Schillaci, the minister of health, stated last week that although the coronavirus won’t go away, it will continue to be under control because Italy has reached a “endemic phase.” Schillaci said that many people test positive for the coronavirus while exhibiting no symptoms, saying that it should be treated in the same manner as influenza. Schillaci nevertheless advised individuals who were most susceptible to infection to wear masks.

Despite data indicating that the rate of distribution is lower than in earlier rounds of the immunization program, Italy has been dispensing fourth vaccine doses.

The nation had given out 142.5 million pills as of Monday. 42.3 million people, or about 88.6% of the population over the age of 12, either had completed the entire vaccination cycle and at least one booster shot, or had recovered from a coronavirus infection in the preceding four months.

4.9 million citizens had already received a second booster dose.

The Gimbe Foundation reports a 21.7 percent rise in intensive care unit patients from 203 to 247 in the week ending November 17 compared to the previous week. Hospital admissions increased overall by 9.8% over the previous week to 6,981.

The Italian Ministry of Health, which last week stopped disclosing daily data on the pandemic to the public, provided the official data on which the Gimbe Foundation’s calculations are based. The new Italian government led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, which assumed office one month ago, is to blame for the policies it has implemented.

Since February 2020, the nation had documented 24.0 million unique cases, and as of Nov. 17, the date of the most recent daily report, there had also been more than 180,000 fatalities.
