Chilwell Commits to Chelsea: Man City Miss Out on Key Transfer Target as Full-Back Signs Four-Year Extension

Ben Chilwell has reportedly agreed to a new contract at Chelsea, putting an end to speculation about a move to Manchester City.

The England international defender is already under contract at Stamford Bridge until 2025, but new terms will keep him in west London until at least 2027.

According to The Athletic, Chilwell is signing a new contract after making 25 appearances for Chelsea this season, with the left-back position being made his own despite big money being invested in Marc Cucurella. The 26-year-old has overcome form and fitness issues to become a key player for both club and country.

The news of Chilwell’s contract extension comes as a blow to Manchester City, who were said to be considering an approach for a player who would tick an important box for Pep Guardiola. With Oleksandr Zinchenko transferred to Arsenal and Joao Cancelo on loan at Bayern Munich, Nathan Ake, a natural center-back, has been asked to fill in at left-back.

Chelsea have had a difficult season as a whole, with interim manager Frank Lampard becoming their third manager of the season, and there is still work to be done this season for a team that has spent around £600 million ($745 million) on new signings to finish in the top half.

Chelsea has made it clear with Chilwell’s new contract that they will speak to players under contract until 2025 ahead of the summer transfer window. This puts these players in particular danger of being sold as the Blues attempt to balance their books after a season of lavish spending in 2022/23. So, who does this imply that Chelsea will also be in talks with?

Edouard Mendy has long been mentioned as a possible departure. Chelsea reportedly offered him a new contract several times during the season, but the Senegalese was reportedly unhappy with the terms of the deal, and negotiations stalled in the winter, only to be restarted in the spring.

At 31, the goalkeeper is still in his prime, and Chelsea, who will be looking for a new shot-stopper this summer, will be eager to recoup the €24m they paid for him in 2020. The same can be said for 28-year-old Kepa Arrizabalaga, though it appears unlikely that he will fetch anything close to the record-breaking €80 million the Blues paid for him, even if a new contract will increase his value.
