Chelsea’s Mudryk Impresses in Inside Left Position, Threatens Playing Time of three key players

Graham Potter has a selection dilemma after Chelsea’s Mykhaylo Mudryk put pressure on three of their stars to be left out of the team.

If Mykhaylo Mudryk continues to play as an inside left, he may push Raheem Sterling, Noni Madueke, and Joao Felix out of the Chelsea starting lineup. Mudryk appeared comfortable on the left side during the team’s 3-1 victory over Leicester and may be in line for a more permanent position in the starting XI.

Since joining Chelsea for £88 million from Shakhtar Donetsk in January, Mudryk has not lived up to expectations. It was anticipated that he would join Arsenal, but negotiations stalled, allowing Chelsea to sign him instead.

Despite his hefty price tag, Mudryk has yet to score a goal in any of his first seven appearances for the club. Consequently, he has spent much of his time on the bench as Potter tries to figure out how best to integrate him into the team. However, Mudryk was back in the starting lineup for the Leicester game, his first start in five matches. While he missed out on his first goal due to an offside ruling, he impressed with an assist for Mateo Kovacic’s goal.

In Chelsea’s 3-4-3 formation, Mudryk played in the inside left position with Kai Havertz and Joao Felix alongside him in attack. If he maintains his place in the team, the 22-year-old could potentially displace three players and limit their playing time.

In recent games, Sterling, Madueke, and Felix have all played on the left-hand side, but with Mudryk now occupying that position, they may struggle to secure a spot in the team. This presents another challenge for Potter as he attempts to determine the most effective system for his sizable squad. However, he has emphasized that he is pleased with Mudryk’s performances thus far.

“He’ll get better and better,” Potter told reporters following the win at the King Power. “He’s a young player that hasn’t that much experience, so each game he’ll get better and better. His attitude is fantastic, he wants to help the team and work with the team. I’m delighted he got an assist and helped us.”
