CCTV captures panga-wielding thugs in Nansana

Four machete-wielding thugs invaded private residences in Wakiso District on Saturday morning, but when an electric alarm went off, they backed off.

The hooded bandits armed with machetes were recorded on CCTV cameras breaking into the establishments in Kibwa-Nabweru, Nansana Municipality, Wakiso District.

According to police investigations, a gang of four persons armed with pangas and breaking instruments broke through the perimeter gate and entered the properties of Paul Kayemba in Kibwa, Nansana Municipality, at 3 a.m. on Saturday.

There are 11 residential rooms on the property, as well as CCTV in the compound and at the gate.

The occupants were warned by an alarm system as soon as they entered the compound, and they made a verbal alarm, causing the thugs to flee.

It was also discovered that the little gate, which also provides access to the premises, had not been shut, and the thugs had utilized it to flee.

One of the house’s residents, Felix Lukwago, told Uganda Radio Network that he was awake when the thugs began scaling the house’s perimeter wall.

“As soon as the CCTV cameras detect any movement, the alarms go off. I heard the camera alarm and looked out the window to see them setting up shop. We quickly began shouting to alert our neighbors, causing the attackers to flee,” Lukwago explained.

He reveals that, despite the thugs’ earlier threats to hurt neighbors via anonymous letters, it took officials from Nabweru Police Station until midday to arrive at the scene.

“We tried calling them late at night, but they didn’t answer. We learned on Thursday that several people in Nansana had received threatening letters. However, what is disturbing is that the police arrived at lunchtime; if they had broken into the house, everyone would have been killed,” Lukwago stated.

This is the first time in recent weeks that machete-wielding attackers have been caught on camera on Kampala’s suburbs. Tensions are high in other parts of Kampala, notably Masanafu in Rubaga Division and Nabingo, as a result of anonymous letters threatening people’ safety.

Lukwago now says they are concerned and want police to beef up security in their neighborhood.

Another resident and local defense secretary, Musa Jingo, has urged locals to remain calm, adding that they have the capacity to handle the issue in concert with the police.
Luke Owoyesigire, a Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, said they have acquired the film that would assist them in tracking down the assailants. He has urged citizens to work with local authorities, stressing that the crisis will be contained.

“It’s also not true that the police were notified of the incident; according to social media posts, the victims admit they didn’t contact the cops.
They simply attempted to contact the regional defense secretary, but their calls went unanswered,” he explained.

Machete assailants initially appeared in the Greater Masaka region, where 29 people have been killed in the last two months.
