Nabbanja: We Need to Use Science, Technology and Innovation to Solve our Problems

The Ugandan government, according to Prime Minister Rt Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, will keep fostering an environment that supports entrepreneurs.

Nabbanja pointed out that Uganda will improve its ability to utilize the advances.

At Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, where National Science Week 2022 was being held, she made the comments.

She claimed that through utilizing science, technology, and innovation, Uganda will be able to fulfill its vision for the year 2040 and adhere to the sustainable development goals.

“I want the general people to visit Kololo and witness firsthand the amazing job being done by our scientists. To address the issues affecting our people and advance prosperity, we must use science, technology, and innovation, she stated.

The dates for National Science Week in 2022 are November 7–10.
This year’s Science Week includes a number of activities, such as a public exhibition showcasing Ugandan innovations, an Investor Summit to encourage investment into Ugandan science, technology, and innovation ventures, and a number of topical panel discussions bringing together different players within the science, technology, and innovation value chain.

The Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Dr. Monica Musenero, stated during the ceremonial opening that science and technology are essential to Uganda’s present and future growth.

“As a government, we are aware that funding for science and technology education is essential for eradicating poverty. This yearly event is significant because it brings together different value chain participants to map out the future of Uganda’s science, technology, and innovation.

Musenero pointed out that investments in research, technology, and innovation account for at least 50% of global economic development, driving economic growth and increasing global competitiveness.

She claimed that the National Science Week will hold a Science, Technology, and Innovation Investor Summit to address the issue of finance for early-stage science, technology, and innovation enterprises.

“We are proactively clearing the path for our start-ups in science, technology, and innovation to obtain the capital they need for successful initiatives. Through this event, we will serve as a link and give inventors a stage to present their concepts to possible backers and get the funding they require, said Dr. Musenero.

On November 10, H.E. the President will preside over a closing ceremony that will mark the conclusion of Science Week.

The main areas of focus for this year’s National Science Week are aerospace and space science, mobility (the manufacture of indigenous motor vehicles), the pathogen economy, industry 4.0+, infrastructure innovation, productivity acceleration, import substitution, and export-focused science, technology, and innovation.

Uganda was placed 102 out of 129 nations in the 2019 Global Innovation Index, behind Tanzania, Kenya, and Rwanda, who were ranked 77, 94, and 97, respectively.

The government will invest in the creation of a strong eco-system, according to NDP III, by integrating science education into primary, secondary, and university curricula, making science and technology accessible at all levels of learning, forming partnerships between university research institutions and industry to make it appealing for the development of human capital, and increasing public awareness of how research can lead to high technology innovation and wealth creation.
