Bayelsa Queens pip Simba Queens to win first Women’s Champions League medal

At Stade Moulay Hassan on Saturday, Bayelsa Queens upset Tanzanian champions Simba Queens 1-0 in the CAF Women’s Champions League third-place game.

With their victory, the Nigerians became the first Nigerian club to win a CAF Interclub medal and won the bronze medal.

After losing 1-0 to the hosts ASFAR earlier on Wednesday, the Nigerian champions were denied the chance to celebrate their victory. However, they have now managed to take home a medal to make up for their unsuccessful debut season.

In the most of the first half of the game, Bayelsa was asking all the right questions, but they were unable to find a solution since both teams made numerous unsuccessful attempts to break the tie.

But in the 70th minute of the game, Mercy Itimi’s excellent cross from the right was hammered home by Juliet Sunday, who ended up scoring the game’s winning goal and earning the bronze medal for Bayelsa Queens.

As a result of the victory, Bayelsa Queens have made history by being the first Nigerian club to take home a medal from a CAF women’s Interclub tournament. In addition, they finished the competition with victories in three of their five games, losing only to Mamelodi Sundowns and ASFAR.

Goalkeeper Bawou Gabrielle earned her second Woman of the Match award in the competition as a result of her excellent goalkeeping in ensuring that Bayelsa Queens celebrate the bronze on their debut.

Despite winning third place, Bayelsa Queens will not receive their bronze medals until until the 2022 CAF Champions League final, which will take held at Moulay Abdellah and feature Mamelodi Sundowns vs. ASFAR Club, the defending champions.
