The Uganda Law Society (ULS) has honored criminal defense lawyer Anthony Wameli Yeboah as their Best Criminal Defense Lawyer of the Year, and Wameli & Co Advocates, Yeboah’s law company, was given the title of Best Law Firm of the Year.

Turyamusiima Geoffrey was granted the prize for human rights defender of the year, while the awards presented to other lawyers included Justice Kenneth Kakuru’s award for excellent lifetime service and an award for emerging star attorney.

In 2012, he began getting a lot of attention for taking on the representation of suspects in the murder of Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Andrew Felix Kaweesi.

He represents Gen Henry Tumukunde, the presidential candidate accused of treason, and Jamil Mukulu, the rebel leader of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF).

Wameli, the legal manager of the NUP, is representing the party’s imprisoned members.

Bobi Wine, the president of the National University of Science and Technology (NUST), stated in a message to Lukwata: “We are immensely thrilled that the legal fraternity considers him as a very committed and devoted lawyer.” “Counsel Wameli has stood up for innumerable comrades who were taken into custody and imprisoned without cause.”

Kyagulanyi also extended his best wishes to Turyamusiima, a fellow member of their legal team, who had recently been elected Human Rights Defender of the Year.

We applaud your achievement in being recognized for your fight for human rights, comrade, and want to personally congratulate you on the honor. “He gave us all blessings, and told us to continue to inspire the younger attorneys, which I believe is our responsibility,” was his parting statement.
