At a news conference, Algerian Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra declared, “We have decided to terminate diplomatic relations with Morocco beginning today.”

Algeria has also been angered by recent allegations that Morocco used Israeli technology to spy on journalists and political leaders, particularly Algerian political and military authorities. Rabat has vehemently disputed the charges.
The two countries have had a tense relationship for a long time, particularly over the disputed territory of Western Sahara.
Morocco has seized the region, while Algeria backs the Polisario Front, which has been fighting for the Saharawi people’s independence from the former Spanish province since the 1970s.
Since 1994, the Algerian-Moroccan border has been closed.
