Ajaz Patel of New Zealand became only the third bowler in international cricket history to take all ten wickets in an innings, achieving the feat against India in the second Test at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
The 33-year-old joined England off-spinner Jim Laker (1956 against Australia) and India leg-spinner Anil Kumble (1999 against Pakistan) as the only bowlers in history to take all four wickets in an innings.
“Welcome to the club Ajaz Patel #Perfect 10,” Kumble, who took 619 Test wickets for India throughout his career, tweeted. You bowled very well! A special effort was made to attain it on the first and second days of a test match.”
Patel, a Mumbai native whose parents immigrated to New Zealand in 1996, added six wickets to his four on the opening day of the match on Friday to end with statistics of 10 for 119.
Patel, who began his career as a fast bowler, exploited the pitch’s strong turn and bounce while carrying the New Zealand bowling on his shoulders to limit the hosts’ first-inning total to 325.
After dismissing Wriddhiman Saha and Ravichandran Ashwin in his first over on Saturday, he returned after the lunch break to dismiss the last four Indian batsmen.
Patel fell down on one knee with a clenched fist before being hugged by his teammates when Rachin Ravindra pouched a skied effort from India’s No 11 batter Mohammed Siraj to seal the loss of the final wicket. The Indian squad gave him a standing ovation in the changing room.
While Patel dominated with the bat, Mayank Agarwal scored the most of the runs for the hosts on the difficult surface. With a cut stroke from Ajaz, Agarwal touched 150, but was caught behind on the following delivery. Axar Patel, an all-rounder, chipped in with 52, his first Test half-century.
