Airlines that carry unvaccinated foreign nationals into Ghana will be fined $3,500 (£2,600) per passenger, according to Ghanaian authorities.

Airlines must also ensure that passengers complete the required health declaration form.

The new directive, which goes into force on Tuesday, aims to stop the spread of the Covid-19 Omicron version.

The fee is intended to strengthen the ban on foreign tourists entering Ghana who have not got the coronavirus vaccine, which went into effect on Monday.

For the next two weeks, Ghanaian citizens and residents living abroad are free from the restriction, but they must be vaccinated upon arrival at the airport.

Authorities are concerned about an increase in infections during the holiday season.

All passengers must show documentation of a negative PCR test within 72 hours of departure, and they will be tested again at the airport upon arrival.
Only about 10% of Ghana’s 30 million people have been immunized.

The vaccine will be made mandatory for government officials, health personnel, and students starting next month, according to the authorities.

According to police, Covid-19 cases documented at the airport accounted for 60% of all cases in the country in the last two weeks.
